Proceed Innovative is a Schaumburg-based digital marketing agency with a second office in Chicago. We compete with several of the firms featured below, so we included ourselves rather than pretend we are somehow outside the competitive landscape and ranked ourselves seventh because that is where our own scoring model placed us.
We are also publishing the criteria, the weights, and the scores behind the list. Change the weights or adjust the criteria, and you will get a different ranking. A ranking is only as useful as the assumptions behind it, and most agency lists leave those assumptions hidden.
We wanted the methodology to be transparent to provide an accurate and informative list of the top 10 B2B digital marketing agencies across Chicago.
How We Built the Ranking
Nine criteria, weighted. Each agency scored 1 to 5 on each one, based on publicly available evidence as of September 2026: agency websites, service pages, published case studies, Clutch and Google review profiles, job postings, and industry recognition.
The Weights
| Criterion | Weight | What We Looked For |
|---|---|---|
| B2B specialization | 20% | Is B2B the core business or one vertical among many? |
| SEO capability | 15% | Technical depth, content, link acquisition, in-house execution |
| Paid media capability | 15% | Search, social, programmatic; platform partnerships |
| AI / GEO capability | 15% | Published AI search offering, structured data work, measurement |
| Chicago presence | 10% | Local office and staff, not a sales address |
| Measurable case studies | 10% | Named outcomes tied to pipeline or revenue, not traffic alone |
| Client reviews | 5% | Volume and consistency across Clutch, Google, G2 |
| Industry experience | 5% | Years operating, client count, vertical depth |
| Strategic depth | 5% | Positioning, demand gen, RevOps, marketing measurement |
Why These Weights
B2B specialization carries the most weight because B2B buying is fundamentally different. Decisions often involve multiple stakeholders, sales cycles can stretch from six to eighteen months, and search volumes are tiny compared with consumer categories. An agency accustomed to running e-commerce campaigns might dismiss a technical keyword generating 40 searches a month as insignificant. For a machine tool manufacturer, that same keyword could represent its entire quarter.
SEO, paid media, and AI visibility each receive 15% because, in 2026, all three channels compete for the same underlying intent. A buyer researching a supplier might search Google, click a paid result, or ask ChatGPT which vendors they should consider. Agencies that focus on only one of those paths leave part of the buyer journey uncovered.
Known Limitations
The model heavily rewards search and AI capabilities. That puts brand- and demand-generation powerhouses at a disadvantage, even when their real strengths lie in positioning, creative, and integrated campaign work. The MX Group is the clearest example. Arguably the most accomplished pure-play B2B agency on this list, it ranks fourth because our weighting favors channel execution over brand strategy. If we gave brand and demand generation a combined 40% weight, MX would rank first.
We scored what agencies publicly demonstrate, not what they may be delivering behind the scenes. An agency with outstanding results but a thin website or limited public case studies will inevitably score lower than it might deserve. Several firms on this list almost certainly have stronger capabilities and results than their public-facing materials reveal.
We also limited the list to agencies with a genuine Chicago-area presence. National firms that simply maintain a Chicago sales listing were excluded, which means we left out some genuinely strong options.
Finally, don’t overinterpret small differences in the rankings. The gap between second and seventh place is just 0.35 points on a five-point scale. At that level, the differences are not particularly meaningful. Think of the top seven as a shortlist, not a leaderboard.

1. Walker Sands
Score: 4.55
walkersands.com
55 W Monroe St., Chicago
Walker Sands is the largest and most decorated pure-play B2B agency headquartered in Chicago. Founded in 2001 by Ken Gaebler, it now runs around 215 people across Chicago, Seattle, and Boston, serving more than 100 B2B clients in technology, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, professional services, and supply chain. Mountaingate Capital acquired a majority stake in October 2025.
What separates Walker Sands from most agencies is that PR and performance marketing sit in the same building and answer to the same plan. Its Outcome-Based Marketing framework starts from a business outcome (category leadership, pipeline growth, market entry) and works backward into channels. For companies in genuinely contested categories, earned media and search reinforce each other in ways neither does alone.
On AI visibility, Walker Sands is further along than almost anyone in the market. It has built a proprietary delivery platform, Atlas AI, and an AI Domain Impact Index for measuring how brands surface in generative answers. Most agencies talk about AI search. Fewer have shipped a measurement product for it.
Consider the fit carefully if: you’re a $10M company. Walker Sands is built for mid-market and enterprise budgets, and the engagement model reflects that. Smaller teams often find the retainer hard to justify against the scope they need.
2. Marcel Digital
Score: 4.50
marceldigital.com
River North, Chicago
Marcel Digital has been independent since 2003 and is explicitly built around B2B. The pitch is integration: SEO, paid media, analytics, and web development staffed in house, in one Chicago office, with no offshoring. For mid-market B2B companies tired of coordinating three vendors who blame each other for flat pipeline, that structure is the product.
Their credentials include Google Premier Partner, Umbraco Platinum Partner, and HubSpot Solutions Partner. Reviews are consistently strong, with a 4.8 to 4.9 average across Clutch and Google.
Marcel scored highest of any agency here on the combination of SEO and paid media, which is why it edged out firms with more name recognition.
Consider the fit carefully if: you need PR, brand repositioning, or a large creative build. Marcel’s center of gravity is performance and platform work, not brand campaigns.
3. Digital Third Coast
Score: 4.33
digitalthirdcoast.com
2540 W North Ave., Chicago
DTC has been doing SEO from Chicago since 2007 and is probably the strongest technical and editorial search shop on this list. Its differentiator is digital PR built on original data. The team produces research and data journalism that earns links from real publications, which is the hardest part of SEO to fake and the part most agencies quietly outsource. Over 30,000 backlinks earned, by its own count.
Service mix runs roughly 55% SEO and 40% paid media, so PPC is a genuine capability rather than an afterthought. DTC now markets AI optimization and GEO as a service line. Clutch reviews are among the best in the market, averaging 4.9 across more than 50 reviews, and clients repeatedly note that you work with the practitioners rather than an account layer.
Consider the fit carefully if: you want a single partner covering brand, creative, and marketing operations. DTC is a search and paid media specialist, and it does not pretend otherwise. Its client base also spans B2B and consumer, so B2B is not the exclusive focus.
4. The MX Group
Score: 4.25
themxgroup.com
7020 High Grove Blvd., Burr Ridge
MX has been B2B-only since 1989 and is the second-largest independent B2B agency in the United States. It ranks second nationally for B2B demand generation and fourth for B2B brand work in B2B Marketing’s benchmarking. It hired its first Chief Creative Officer, Paul Hirsch, in July 2025, which signals where the firm is investing.
For manufacturers, MX is the most credentialed option in Chicagoland. Its manufacturing practice covers structural steel, precision forging, biomanufacturing, and test systems, and the published outcomes are specific: a 146% increase in sales-qualified leads, 41 closed deals from a single trade show floor, and a 600% revenue increase from one ABM campaign. It also handles the unglamorous parts of industrial marketing that pure digital shops skip, including trade publication media, sales enablement collateral, ROI calculators, and channel programs.
MX placed fourth only because our weights favor search and AI channel depth. On strategic depth and case study quality it scored a perfect 5.
Consider the fit carefully if: you want a downtown office or a small-engagement retainer. Burr Ridge is about 20 minutes west of the Loop, and MX works with roughly 40 client organizations at enterprise scope.
5. VisualFizz
Score: 4.20
visualfizz.com
Chicago, remote-first team
Founded in 2016 by Dan Salganik and Marissa Ryan, VisualFizz is a Chicago-rooted, remote-first agency built for industrial, manufacturing, construction, and technical B2B. It runs a dedicated division for that work called VisualFizz Builds, plus a specific practice for OEMs and component suppliers focused on getting products specified in and generating engineering leads.
For a company in the $10M to $30M range selling something complicated, VisualFizz hits a useful middle. It combines brand strategy, SEO, paid media, and web development, so you get positioning and execution from the same team, without enterprise agency pricing. Reviews are strong and client tenure appears long.
Consider the fit carefully if: you need deep marketing operations, RevOps, or PR. And note the trade-off of a 20-person shop: senior attention, thinner bench.
6. OneIMS
Score: 4.18
oneims.com
Wacker Drive, Chicago
OneIMS is a Chicago B2B lead generation agency organized around HubSpot. It’s a HubSpot Diamond Partner as well as a certified Google Ads and Semrush partner, and its framing is straightforward: acquisition plus retention equals growth. Manufacturing has historically been a large share of its client base.
OneIMS is also unusually current on AI search. It publishes actively on AEO and GEO, including work on which pages manufacturers need before AI search will recommend them and how to get subject matter experts visible in generative answers. That’s a topic most agencies are still catching up to.
Where OneIMS earns its keep is the connection between marketing and the CRM. If your problem is that leads arrive and then vanish into an unmanaged pipeline, an agency that lives in HubSpot is worth more than one that just drives traffic.
Consider the fit carefully if: you’re not on HubSpot and don’t intend to be. Much of the value is platform-specific. Public case study detail is also thinner than at several firms above.
7. Proceed Innovative
Score: 4.15
proceedinnovative.com
Schaumburg + Chicago
We’ve been running SEO and paid media out of Schaumburg since 2008, with a Chicago office and clients nationwide. Our B2B work includes dedicated practices for manufacturers and contractors, alongside multi-location SEO for franchise networks.
Where we scored highest was AI and GEO capability, and it’s the part of our own model we feel best about. We publish an AI SEO and Generative Engine Optimization service line, and we built a structured LLM information page on our own site before recommending the same approach to clients. Our GEO work is also integrated with paid search rather than sold separately, which matters as more buyer research starts inside AI assistants and never reaches a search results page.
Where we scored lowest, and why we’re seventh: B2B specialization. B2B is one of five industries we serve, alongside restoration, home care, legal, and contracting. Walker Sands, MX, VisualFizz, and Innovaxis are B2B-only. On the criterion carrying the most weight in our model, they beat us, and we’re not going to reweight the model to fix that.
We also scored lower on strategic depth. We don’t run a PR practice, an ABM program, or account-based demand generation.
We’re the right fit if: you’re a mid-market B2B company where the bottleneck is search and AI visibility, you want SEO and Google Ads managed by the same team against the same pipeline targets, and you’d rather have direct access to senior people than an account services layer.
8. Orbit Media Studios
Score: 3.85
orbitmedia.com
4043 N Ravenswood Ave., Chicago
Orbit has been building websites in Chicago since 2001, more than 1,000 of them, and has been a certified B Corp for over a decade. It runs a B2B digital marketing practice, but the center of the business is websites: strategy, UX, content, development, and ongoing optimization, all in house across a team of roughly 50.
For B2B companies whose real problem is a website that looks fine and converts nothing, Orbit is arguably the strongest option in the city. It’s also serious about AI discoverability, offering audits that examine content, metadata, schema, and site structure with human validation on top of AI-surfaced insights. Orbit is unusually generous with published research, which is why other agencies keep citing it.
Consider the fit carefully if: you need paid media. Based on Orbit’s published service lines, PPC management isn’t part of the offering, so you’d need a second partner for paid search and social.
9. Straight North
Score: 3.80
straightnorth.com
1001 W 31st St., Downers Grove
Straight North has been running SEO, PPC, and lead generation websites since 1997, with 100-plus in-house marketers and an A+ BBB rating held since 2011. Its distinctive practice is real-time lead validation and reporting: campaigns get judged on validated sales leads rather than raw form fills. For companies that have been burned by agencies reporting inflated conversion counts, that’s a meaningful check.
It’s a good fit for small and middle-market firms that need lead volume across both B2B and consumer channels, and pricing starts lower than most of this list, with typical SEO engagements in the $4,000 to $8,000 per month range.
Consider the fit carefully if: you need B2B specialization. Straight North serves both B2B and B2C companies, so businesses looking for a B2B-only agency may prefer a more specialized provider.
10. Innovaxis Marketing
Score: 3.63
innovaxisinc.com
4043 N Ravenswood Ave., Chicago
Innovaxis is a B2B-only marketing consultancy founded in 2007 and a certified women-owned and minority-owned business, with WBENC, SBA WOSB, City of Chicago MWBE, and State of Illinois DBE certifications. That combination matters for companies with supplier diversity requirements, and there aren’t many B2B specialists in Chicago who can meet them.
Its manufacturing credentials come from operator experience rather than agency experience. Team members have led product management and marketing communications inside manufacturers including Crane Valves, Shure, Bell & Howell Scanners, and Johnson & Johnson. Beyond promotion, Innovaxis offers market research, new product launch, pricing strategy, and global distribution channel development, which is closer to fractional product marketing than to a digital agency. Published case studies cite ROI figures from 837% to 2,139%.
Consider the fit carefully if: search and paid media are your priority. Innovaxis scored lowest on SEO, paid media, and AI capability. Its strength is upstream strategy, and engagements start smaller than most firms here.
Quick Answers: Who’s Best for What
- Best for enterprise B2B: Walker Sands. Scale, category expertise across six verticals, integrated PR and performance, and the most developed AI measurement capability in the market. Runner-up: The MX Group, which is the better call if brand positioning matters more than channel execution.
- Best for manufacturing: The MX Group. B2B-only since 1989, deep experience across engineered and industrial sectors, and published outcomes tied to sales-qualified leads and closed deals. It also handles trade publication media and sales enablement, which digital-only shops skip. For mid-market manufacturers, VisualFizz Builds is the more accessible option. For smaller manufacturers needing product marketing and channel strategy, look at Innovaxis.
- Best for SEO: Digital Third Coast. Nineteen years of specialist focus, original-research digital PR that earns real links, and the strongest review record in the category. Runner-up: Marcel Digital, if you want SEO and paid search managed by the same team.
- Best for AI visibility: Walker Sands at enterprise scale, for the Atlas AI platform and the AI Domain Impact Index. Measuring generative visibility is genuinely hard and almost nobody has built tooling for it. At mid-market budgets, look at Proceed Innovative or OneIMS, both of which have shipped GEO service lines and publish working detail on structured data and AI search rather than positioning statements.
- Best for integrated SEO + PPC: Marcel Digital. Google Premier Partner, in-house SEO and paid teams in one Chicago office, plus analytics staffed alongside them so attribution isn’t a separate vendor conversation. Runner-up: Proceed Innovative for mid-market budgets, or Straight North if lead volume and validation matter more than strategic depth.
- Best for a $10M–$30M company: VisualFizz. That revenue band is the awkward middle. Too big for a freelancer, too small for enterprise retainers, and usually one marketing manager doing everything. VisualFizz gives you positioning and execution from the same team at a scale that fits. If your growth is search-led, Proceed Innovative or Marcel Digital are strong alternatives. If your problem is CRM and pipeline management rather than traffic, OneIMS.

Five Questions to Ask Any Agency on This List
The ranking is a starting point. These questions will tell you more than any list will.
1. Who Actually Does the Work?
Ask for the names and titles of the people on your account, and whether anything is subcontracted or offshored. Some agencies here staff everything in house and say so directly. Ask, and get it in writing.
2. Show Me a Case Study in My Revenue Band, Not Just My Industry
A manufacturing case study for a $500M company tells you almost nothing about how an agency handles a $20M company with one marketing manager. The constraints are completely different.
3. What’s Your AI Visibility Offering, Specifically?
Follow up with: how do you measure it, and what did you change on a client’s site last month to improve it? Vague answers here are common in 2026. Good answers involve structured data, entity clarity, and content that answers questions directly.
4. How Will You Report on Pipeline, Not Traffic?
For B2B with a nine-month sales cycle, organic sessions are a leading indicator at best. Ask what they’ll show you in month three, month six, and month twelve, and which of those numbers your CFO will accept.
5. What Would Make You Tell Me This Isn’t a Fit?
An agency that has never turned down business is an agency that will take yours regardless of whether it can help.
Top 10 B2B Digital Marketing Agencies in Chicago FAQs
How Much Does a B2B Digital Marketing Agency in Chicago Cost?
Ranges vary widely by scope and agency size. Mid-market SEO and paid media retainers in Chicago commonly run $4,000 to $15,000 per month. Enterprise integrated programs involving brand, PR, and demand generation typically start well above that. Project minimums at the firms on this list range from around $1,000 to $25,000-plus.
Do I Need a Chicago Agency, or Will a Remote One Work?
Remote works fine for search and paid media execution. Local presence matters more when you need on-site discovery workshops, trade show support, sales team interviews, or video production. Several agencies here run remote-first teams from Chicago roots, which is a reasonable middle ground.
What Is GEO, and Is It Different From SEO?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your business discoverable and citable inside AI-generated answers, in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and similar tools. It overlaps heavily with technical SEO and content quality, but it adds specific work around structured data, entity clarity, and content formatted to answer questions directly. It doesn’t replace SEO. In 2026 it’s a parallel channel that draws on the same foundation.
Should I Hire a B2B Specialist or a Full-Service Generalist?
If your sales cycle is long and involves multiple decision makers, specialization usually pays for itself. Generalists tend to apply consumer tactics to committee purchases. The exception is when your needs span B2B and consumer audiences, or when budget makes a specialist retainer unrealistic.
How Long Before a B2B SEO Program Produces Leads?
Expect meaningful ranking movement in three to six months, and qualified lead flow in six to twelve, depending on domain strength, competition, and content volume. Any agency promising qualified B2B pipeline in 60 days is describing paid media, not SEO.
